Moto Na Maji (Swahili for Fire and Water) is a film project by Shinnyo-en and Swell Productions that documents the planning and rehearsals as well as the fire and water ceremony performed by Shinnyo-en at the Laikipia Nature Conservancy in Kenya on March 4, 2012.
Moto Na Maji (Fire & Water) documents how an extraordinary international group of religious leaders, social advocates, environmentalists, and artists gathered with local communites at the edge of the Great Rift Valley in Kenya, the cradle of humanity, to offer prayers for a new awakening of compassion and altruism. An ancient fire and water ceremony was adapted by Shinnyo-en, the Japanese Buddhist order, to be shared and to be meaningful for everyone. As the clergy, artists, and local communites worked together they realized a moving transcendence of difference and a spirit of harmony. The film shares with all of us their experience, as sung in Swahili: “Mother Africa, home to the human soul, we all have one heart, one love. We are all family. We your children return with a gift: a ceremony of fire [awakening].”
