Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai'i 2020 to be replaced by an alternative virtual ceremony

March 18, 2020
Tokyo, Japan

The world is facing an enormously difficult and challenging situation with the outbreak of COVID-19, and our thoughts go out to the thousands of people worldwide who have been affected, including those in our Hawaii community.

We have been monitoring the situation very closely and understand the difficult decisions that many organizations and individuals have had to make over the past weeks to alter their plans due to the rapidly changing nature of the outbreak.

Unfortunately, we have come to the conclusion that it would be in the best interests of the community to cancel Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai‘i this year.

Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawaiʻi has become an important and beloved tradition to our community, and this decision was not made lightly. However, the health and safety of the thousands of attendees, participants, volunteers and staff are of utmost importance. Therefore, we felt that, under the circumstances, it would be prudent to cancel the ceremony.

In lieu of this year’s ceremony, an alternative virtual ceremony is being planned and will take place on May 25, 2020. Details will be announced shortly. Your messages of remembrance and commitment to positive action will be included in this observance.
