Lantern Building Workshops Kick-off Preparations for Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace

New York, NY

Preparations have been underway for several months for the Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace. This year, for the first time, Shinnyo-en volunteers and New Yorkers came together to learn about the Shinnyo Lantern Floating for Peace through lantern building workshops.

The first workshop, held in Bryant Park in August, was a collaboration between The Shinnyo Center and the Bryant Park Business Improvement District, and was attended by more than 100 people from the area. New Yorkers of all ages, including families, people who work in the vicinity and visitors to the city, participated in the workshop by expressing their personal messages of peace on the paper lantern shades, which will be constructed and floated during the ceremony on September 20.

This Tuesday, September 15, The Shinnyo Center will host a special lantern building workshop that is open to the public and will also be attended by several of Shinnyo-en’s New York City community partners. Since its re-opening last fall, The Shinnyo Center has developed partnerships with organizations and businesses such as the Garment District Alliance, The City University of New York’s Graduate Center, Idealist and others, as a way to introduce mindfulness practice and the benefits of Shinnyo guided meditation to busy New Yorkers.
