New York, NY
On December 17, 2016, Shinnyo-en practitioners in the New York City area participated in the city’s East 9th Street Precinct’s annual holiday toy drive. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Shinnyo-en’s participation in this local holiday event. Shinnyo-en members have volunteered to make this event a success for the local children it benefits.
Again this year, members of Shinnyo-en’s music group Universal Beat played festive holiday themed music for the attendees. Universal Beat played their staple act, a rendition of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," while Santa stepped out of the police car to greet the children. While the children waited patiently in line to receive their gifts from the NYPD’s very own Santa; volunteers including Universal Beat, NYU cheerleaders, and a man on stilts entertained the participating families who stood and danced along in the snowy weather.
This New York Police Department Holiday Toy Drive attracts over 500 local and disadvantaged children and families living in the East 9th Street Police Precinct which serves the East Village and the Lower East Side.
Shinnyo-en is proud to be part of the New York City community, partnering with local organizations such as the New York City Police Department’s East 9th Street Precinct to make events like this possible.
